Introduction: For Home Automation there are 4 main technologies known as 2 Wires, Infrared, Radio frequency and Power Line Carrier

  • The 2 wire technology is reliable and not prone to interference. The disadvantage is that it required massive wiring and it’s very difficult to install, modified or troubleshoot in case of failure.
  • Infrared is mostly used for remote control and it works very well but can only control one room as the infrared signal can only travel where there is visual proximity from the remote control to the sensor. Infrared signal cannot travel through the walls or opaque surfaces.
  • Radio frequency. Can control the entire home without wiring although it is susceptible to interference and the receptors are relatively expensive. Not available in Thailand since it would need to pass national radio frequency interference standards.

Power line carrier. Is a technology that combines the benefits of 2 wire and Radio frequency technologies but none of the disadvantages. Conclusion: the power line carrier technology can control the entire home without additional wiring and it’s not subject to interference and regulations as the radio frequency. The name of the Legrand model is “In One” and it can use optional infrared remote controls if desired.
